Movie : Minsara Kanavu (1997)
Cast : Arvind Swamy, Kajol, Prabhu Deva
Lyrics : Vairamuthu
Director : Rajiv Menon
Producer : AVM
Thomas (Arvindswamy), the only foreign returned son of a factory owner James (S. P. Balasubramaniam) falls at first sight in love with Priya alias Pappi (Kajol) while visiting his headmistress aunt and Mother Superior (Arundathi Nag), the girl being a student in the school. Thomas happens to be the son of James, an ex-employee of Amalraj (Girish Karnard). Priya is his daughter. Madly in love James fails to muster courage to say the vital three words to her and seeks the help of a modern barber Deva (Prabhu Deva) said to be an ``expert'' in knowing the heart of women. His advises backfire thanks to the gentlemanly and timid attitude of Thomas and instead Priya is drawn towards a person below her status, though she has told the Mother Superior that she would become a nun, the wise lady telling her to have a feel of the world before she comes to that irrevocable decision. The heartburns of the two men and the power of true love rocking the girl's resolution, fill the frames with a light-hearted finale.
Kajol with her ``electrifying'' eyes is a good choice for the love-smitten girl and looks natural right through. In the climax scene enacted in pouring rain she combines well with Arvindswamy who pleads the case of Deva cursing himself for not mustering courage to express his love for her, both artistes according a vibrant punch to the drama. Arvindswamy not finding his feet in the earlier portions, barring the start, caps it with a fine piece of acting in the end portion. Prabhu Deva might not have figured in a solo dance but shows a definite improvement in acting particularly in the scene where he converses with blind music scorer Guru (Nasser) about Priya. Prakashraj just peeps in and vanishes. S. P. Balasubramaniam cuts a nice cameo. Good support is extended by Girish Karnard, V. K. Ramasamy and Arundathi Nag.
